How to make Illustrator's smart guides work smarter

I'm in Adobe Illustrator, and I'm tracing some shapes as one does. I've turned on smart guides because I want everything to work, you know, smartly. But, the frustration starts when I move one shape and expect it to snap to the other. Of course, it doesn't work! I nudge it back and forth and well, close enough, but not exact, precise, or very smart at all. Why call it "smart" guides, when it acts more like "pretty good guides" most of the time?

I've found a solution—just 10 pts. It won't work as intelligently as Adobe Indesign's guides, but its the best answer I know thus far.

Under the smart guides' preferences, you'll see the snapping tolerance set to 10 pt. I used to have it at 1 pt, which led to my frustration. If you've felt that same frustration, you know what I'm talking about. Now that I've changed it to 10 pt, I work much faster and accurately. Objects snap faster to their bounding boxes (I'll cover bounding boxes later) from a greater distance. Now, if there was only a way to change the tolerance with keyboard shortcuts.

If anyone has any other tips or tricks to making smart guides work more accurately, please let me know.
